2010 We Build People Campaign
Everyone has a YMCA Story...

“Over the past 17 years I've had some financial struggles from time to time, and it was at those times when I needed the Y the most.  I couldn't pay for my membership, but the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA took care of me.”

Those are the words of “Tom,” a person who needed help and found it at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA.  If you were a single mother, raising a child with a disability and facing all the bills that come with any illness, what would you do? Where would you go to improve your health, relax your mind and refresh your spirit?

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA is devoted to helping people through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body. And, as a community-based, non-profit organization, the YMCA believes that those programs should be available to everyone, regardless of financial status.

That’s what We Build People is all about. Through this annual fund-raising campaign, the YMCA is able to provide financial assistance to those who might otherwise be unable to afford YMCA programs and memberships.

How do you put a price tag on learning to swim, playing soccer or going to summer camp? What is the dollar value of making friends, building self-esteem and developing character traits such as integrity, respect and responsibility?
As much as we would like to think otherwise, there is a bottom line to everything, which is why the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA distributed more than a quarter of a million dollars in financial assistance in 2009. Those funds created opportunities and opened doors that might otherwise never have existed for many area residents. The We Build People campaign made it possible: for hundreds of children to experience the YMCA’s core values of caring, honest, respect and responsibility; for families to bond and grow closer by providing a place to spend time together through shared activities; to give adults a place to maintain their health and feel a sense of community and belonging.
